Skye Silks

13/02/2021 - 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Jaine Mahon is a spinner, weaver and dyer specialising in silk with over 30 years of experience. She has exhibited her work nationally and teaches classes and workshops. She will show you her studio and some of her work, before giving a brief overview of silk and it’s history.

You will have a look at different types of silk available for handspinning, their characteristics and uses. Learn which spinning (and plying) techniques are suitable for each type of silk and some tips and tricks to help.

Jaine is making up sample packs which members can buy at cost (£14 including p&p). She will demonstrate spinning each type of silk and give some thoughts on what type of projects each is suitable for. The silk sample pack includes: A1 silk mulberry tops, tussah tops, mulberry noils, silk mawata cap, degummed cocoons, throwsters waste, sari silk, camel/silk tops, eri silk tops and carded cocoon strippings to have some fun with.

It is very important that requests and payments for packs are received by Monday 18th January to enable collation and postage. Please pay by cheque or BACs to the treasurer Liz Armstrong – details in the January newsletter.
